In a music world that is ruled by
computer generated samples and generic loops, it is hard to find quality music
nowadays. One band is breaking that trend. Although broken up, Basement, all
the way from Ipswich, England, has produced some of my favorite music in recent
years. With their newest release in 2012 titled “Colourmeinkindness”, they draw
inspiration from bands such as Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, The
Pixies, and Alice in Chains. They take classic grunge characteristics and put
their own twist on it. Songs like “Whole” and “Covet”, the albums opening
tracks, have a relatively slower tempo and that iconic thick, fuzzy, and
heavily distorted guitar sound. Paired with these aggressive guitars are some
deep, rich drums, which makes every song feel full. Toward the end of the
track, “Whole”, they have a break down and have a very nice instrumental jam. On
the flip side, songs like “Pine” and “Comfort” offer a sound that’s a little
subtler. Melodic riffs and heart felt lyrics flood these two particular songs
with tremendous emotion.
Now, I am aware that everyone is
not the biggest “grungehead”, but I do think everyone should give it a listen. It
is something very different and some people may not care for it. Even when I
first listened to it I cannot say I was a fan, but it definitely grew on me
more and more. It is a nice refresher from all of the music on the radio today.
